He has IP banning, IP lockouts, 404 detections, the capability of automatically identifying bad acting IPs, and much more. Therefore, you can eliminate spam and anyone up to no good before they have a chance even to reach your website.

Funny enough I’ve been using WordPress since 2014 and I’ve never really had a problem with spam. I’ve not been doing anything special, mostly my strategy has revolved around the following: disable all comments as part of a new site build.

To use Akismet, you need to get an Akismet.com API key. Keys are free for personal blogs, and there are paid subscriptions available for businesses and commercial WordPress sites. So, depending on what kind of operation you have set up, you can choose accordingly.

Spam is such a big problem. Have to say that Akismet and Defender have proved just the ticket for me. Plus the feature of Akismet where you can install and have it scan existing comments is very useful.

I’ve also used CleanTalk, which has been really good in blocking spam on my bbpress forum.

The key is keeping on top of it!

Good list here, thanks! I also recommend the Ban Hammer plugin (Mika Epstein) which blocks predictable email addresses from registering. I enhanced that to use regex and to apply to user names. Then, for IDs that are flagged, just don’t even email a challenge to complete the registration. A lot more can be done in this area to avoid false positives and to improve the blacklist.
